The watch features Ebels highly refined in-house chronometer-certified Caliber 137 automatic chronograph movement, the result of Ebel's decision in the late 1980s to develop and produce their own high quality column wheel chronograph movement--over a decade before Omega and Breitling began developing their own in-house chronograph calibers. Previously Ebel had used the renowned Zenith El Primero in its 1911 chronographs rather than the widely used Valjoux 7750, but with Rolex starting to use them for the Daytona, Ebel decided to produce their own in-house chronograph caliber. Lemania 1340, a high quality column wheel chronograph movement, also the basis for the Omega 1040 and Breguets Type XX caliber. Redesigned the winding mechanism, reworked the chronograph train, increasing the jewel count from 22 to 27, built it to COSC chronometer standards and introduced it in 1995 as their Caliber 137.
To put the sophistication of the Ebel's movement in that period into perspective, at the time of its introduction, Breitling's top-of-the-line Windrider Chronomat chronograph was using a non-chronometer grade Valjoux 7750, which uses cam actuation, less precise, and cheaper to produce than column-wheel actuation. 137/139 as the basis of Ulysse Nardins first in-house chronograph movement, the UN-150. This sophisticated movement is set in a stainless steel hand-finished monocoque case, 40 mm wide without the crown, and 11 mm in height.
